Gutter Care-Cleaning and
Protecting
Why Worry
About Your Gutters?
| Most of us
simply like to ignore the rain gutters on our homes
until we see leaves hanging over the top or weeds
growing up over a foot tall. |
|
There are countless reasons for
having gutters on your home but we'll discuss
that another day. Lets just say if you are
suffering from mold, mildew, damp or leaking
basements, these are all symptoms of poor
drainage which relate directly to properly
installed and properly operating gutters on
your home. Gutters that are not working as
designed can cause a major headache for
homeowners at times. The wood fascia around the
house can actually rot by water backing up from
clogged gutters.
In winter, ice-dams can form on
top of a clogged gutter. Snow and ice
build up across the top of the gutter and
freeze. During the next thaw, water
running off the roof is blocked from
going into and down the downspout and can
back up into the house. This can lead to
major wall and ceiling damage.

Inspect your gutters at least once
each season. Walk around your home and note
if they are hanging low or away from the
house. This is very common on neglected
gutter systems over 10 years old. This is
not rocket science but in our mountainous
NE PA, Pocono area, many homes are two and
three stories high. Not every homeowner has
the equipment, ability or willingness to
climb and clean those gutters, let alone
repair them.
|
| Hints: Don't waste your time trying
to drive in those loose spikes holding your
gutters onto the fascia. They'll only loosen
again over time. Use the new screws
available at your local home stores.
Installed correctly, nothing could be more
secure. |
 |
| Hints: Don't waste your money on
handy dandy telescoping sprayers as pictured
here unless you have a one-story ranch house.
When you can't see what you are actually
doing, you can actually make those clogs
worse. |
