Abusive Relationships

Abusive Relationships

One thing that makes me sad is the number of young women who find themselves in abusive relationships over and over again. It seems that there is something within these women that makes them think that this is the best that they can get, even if they aren’t consciously having that thought. I have seen some get out of one bad relationship only to jump into one that is even worse. This makes me even more determined to teach my daughter to respect herself and to expect nothing less from everyone else in her life.

Abusive relationships aren’t always obvious. Though after while a woman who is beaten by a man will show some signs of it, there are other types of abuse. You cannot deny that there are many who are in abusive relationships that go much deeper. You cannot discount the power of words and emotions. Sometimes these are even worse than being hit. When someone is abusing someone mentally and emotionally it might not be something evident to anyone else. This is much easier to hide.

No matter what is going on, abusive relationships take their toll. Women with low self worth are left feeling totally worthless, and they feel that they deserve that they are getting. Those who are strong don’t understand this, and there is a good reason for this. You don’t know what it is like to be in abusive relationships until you are in one. There are many things that lead up to a woman being pulled into a relationship like this, and it is often a accumulation of life events that only they can understand.

If you are worried that your daughter may end up in abusive relationships there are a few things that you can do. You have to start early in life to build their self esteem. There are no limits on the what your words will mean to your daughter as she grows. It is never to late to start either. Make sure you teach her that that only person she has to answer to is herself, and she deserves nothing less than true love and respect from a partner. Though you may not be able to completely shield her from abusive relationships, your word and your influence can go a long way. You may sometimes feel that your words or what you do are bouncing right off of her unheard, but I can assure you that you have the biggest influence in her thinking and how she sees herself. Don’t let her down.
